Sikh Pilgrimage — Panj Takhts & Beyond

Five Takhts across four states. Ten Guru birthplaces and sacred sites. The Golden Temple — the most visited place in the world. One complete circuit covering the entire spiritual geography of Sikhism.

Panj Takht — Five Supreme Seats

The five Takhts are the highest seats of Sikh temporal and spiritual authority, spread across four states of India. Completing the Panj Takht Yatra is considered the most sacred pilgrimage a Sikh can undertake.

01

Sri Akal Takht Sahib

📍 Golden Temple Complex, Amritsar, Punjab
⚡ 1606 AD by Guru Hargobind Ji

The highest seat of Sikh temporal authority. Established in 1606 by the sixth Sikh Guru, Guru Hargobind Ji. The Akal Takht represents Miri-Piri — temporal and spiritual authority combined. Major decisions for the Sikh community worldwide are pronounced from here. It stands directly opposite the Golden Temple (Harmandir Sahib). The golden dome and white marble make this one of the most striking structures in religious architecture anywhere.

✓ Golden Temple (Harmandir Sahib) — most visited sacred site on earth ✓ Langar Hall — 100,000 people fed free daily since 1604 ✓ Akal Takht — supreme seat of Sikh authority ✓ Amrit Sarovar — sacred pool surrounding the temple ✓ Jallianwala Bagh — 5 minutes walk — moving historical site ✓ Wagah Border Ceremony — 30km — most dramatic daily ceremony in Asia

Takht Sri Keshgarh Sahib

📍 Anandpur Sahib, Punjab
⚡ Established 1699 — Khalsa Panth founded here

The birthplace of the Khalsa. On Baisakhi Day 1699, Guru Gobind Singh Ji called thousands of Sikhs to Anandpur and created the Khalsa — the Brotherhood of the Pure — by administering Amrit (holy nectar) to the first five Panj Pyaras. This is one of the most emotionally charged sites in Sikhism. Anandpur Sahib hosts the spectacular Hola Mohalla festival — a 3-day celebration of martial arts and warrior spirit that draws hundreds of thousands of devotees.

✓ Takht Sri Keshgarh Sahib — Khalsa birthplace ✓ Khalsa Heritage Museum — stunning architecture by Moshe Safdie ✓ Hola Mohalla Festival — March — Nihang warriors, horse stunts ✓ Anandgarh Fort — Guru Gobind Singh's fortress ✓ Kiratpur Sahib — 20km — first Sikh city ✓ Bhakra Dam — massive engineering near Anandpur

Takht Sri Damdama Sahib

📍 Talwandi Sabo, Bathinda, Punjab
⚡ Guru Gobind Singh compiled Guru Granth Sahib here in 1705

Known as the Guru Ki Kashi (the Guru's Varanasi) — a supreme seat of learning. It was here in 1705 that Guru Gobind Singh Ji compiled the final edition of Guru Granth Sahib (the eternal Guru) dictating it to Bhai Mani Singh. This was a pivotal moment in Sikh history — the completion of the holy scripture that would become the permanent Guru of all Sikhs. The Takht is surrounded by other historic Gurudwaras and is a centre of Sikh scholarship.

✓ Takht Damdama Sahib — main Gurudwara ✓ Guru ka Langar — community kitchen always open ✓ Sarovars (sacred pools) — peaceful reflection ✓ Bathinda Fort — historical city nearby ✓ Patiala — royal heritage city 60km away

Takht Sri Patna Sahib

📍 Patna City, Bihar
⚡ Birthplace of Guru Gobind Singh Ji — 1666 AD

The most emotionally significant Takht for most Sikhs — it is the birthplace of the tenth and final human Guru, Guru Gobind Singh Ji. Born here in 1666, the young Gobind spent his early childhood in Patna before moving to Anandpur Sahib. The Gurudwara houses extraordinary relics — Guru Gobind Singh's weapons, the iron ring (kara) he wore, his sandals (padukas), and a letter written in his own hand. Built in glorious white marble and golden domes by Maharaja Ranjit Singh.

✓ Takht Patna Sahib — birthplace of Guru Gobind Singh Ji ✓ Sacred relics — weapons, sandals, kara, handwritten letter ✓ Har Mandir Sahib Ji Patna — the Gurudwara building ✓ Sikh Museum inside the complex ✓ Combine with Bodh Gaya Buddhist circuit — 2 hours away ✓ Nalanda University ruins — 90 minutes from Patna

Takht Sri Hazur Sahib

📍 Nanded, Maharashtra
⚡ Final resting place of Guru Gobind Singh Ji — 1708 AD

The most sacred site in South India for Sikhs. This is where Guru Gobind Singh Ji spent his final days in 1708, where he declared Guru Granth Sahib as the eternal perpetual Guru, and where he attained Jyoti Jot (merged with the divine light) on October 7, 1708. The inner sanctum (Angitha Sahib) marks the exact cremation site. The Gurudwara sits on the banks of the sacred Godavari River. The annual Guru Gaddi Diwas celebration brings hundreds of thousands of pilgrims.
